A Strong Local Voice for Erith and Thamesmead

About Me

I was honoured to be elected as the Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead first in May 2010 and in May 2015 and June 2017. I am proud to serve the community which I have lived in for nearly 40 years.

I care about the things you care about because I live here. I use the same shops and services as you do - the same roads, hospitals and trains. I have worked hard to be a strong local voice in Parliament, to stick up for our patch and bring change where I can.

I believe it is more important than ever to ensure that our area is represented by somebody with a strong local voice.

Before I was an MP I worked for the Inland Revenue and as a Senior Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers specialising in tax investigations. I have also been a local councillor in Erith and a school governor, both at Castillion Primary in Thamesmead and Townley Grammar in Bexleyheath. I have two adult daughters and five grandchildren.

I have helped as many constituents as I can through adversity and campaigned on many local issues, from  fly-tipping in Plumstead to anti-social behaviour in North Heath, from Housing Associations’ service charges to the lack of disabled access at Erith Rail Station, and from the opportunities and impact of the Crossrail development to the regeneration that is taking place across Abbey Wood, Thamesmead and beyond.

In Parliament, I have fought against the Coalition and the Tory government's damaging policies such as the Bedroom Tax and the creeping privatisation of the NHS. I have been on the Treasury Select Committee, the Work and Pensions Select Committee and the Public Accounts Committee which allowed me to scrutinise the government’s damaging policies and question Ministers. Most recently I have served as a Shadow Housing Minister and as Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, allowing me to further focus on two issues in Parliament which have a huge effect on local residents - the housing crisis and cuts to local government funding.

The country and our local area face enormous challenges, whether it is Brexit, the housing crisis, Southeastern rail, or the NHS and social care. Labour will stand up for you by investing for a better Britain, offer the health and social care services people need and providing the homes that people can afford.

Together we can deliver a better, fairer Britain where prosperity is shared, where public services are protected and where the next generation are given the best possible start in life.
